Only Fool's Rush In
Why do so many golfers act on impulse when they’re buying clubs? Perhaps it’s the price, perhaps it’s the ‘hype’ surrounding the product in question or perhaps it’s on the recommendation of a fellow golfer. Unfortunately, the only way you’ll ever get real long-term performance improvement from a club is if you make sure it fits you ‘like a glove’ before you hand over your hard-earned cash.
Let me show you where so many golfers go wrong:
TRACTION VS TORQUE: THE BATTLE FOR GRIP
The torque created by the twisting motion of a golf swing is quite literally strong enough to sweep a golfer off his feet. Stopping that from actually happening are a number of thorny protrusions on the sole of each shoe called ‘studs’. These provide multiple points of contact between the shoe and the ground, resisting the swing’s torque by increasing traction.
Why is traction so important? Because if the traction provided by the shoe is less than the torque applied by the swing you’ll lose grip and balance, and that means a loss of control and power. To maintain the same level of grip with worn studs you’ll need to slow your swing down to re-address the ‘Traction Vs Torque’ balance, sacrificing distance in the process. How appealing does that sound?
Studs are cheap and easily replaceable (so you have NO excuse for letting them wear down), but it’s the responsibility of the shoe itself to make sure those studs can do their job; by keeping them in contact with the ground or the longest time possible. That’s why a golf shoe has to offer both stability (the ability to hold the foot in place during the swing) and flexibility (complimenting the natural movements of the foot while walking) if it’s to be effective.
Bring your shoe in to the shop for a quick “M.O.T” and I’ll let you know whether a stud or a shoe change is in order.

Custom Fitting
Manufacturers know that golfers can’t resist the promise of extra distance; that’s why they’ll make sure that every new Driver will be their “Longest ever”. But what’s a yard really worth? Let’s find out.
Our subject is an ‘average’ golfer with an average handicap and, crucially, a Driver bought ‘off the shelf’ from the high street because it was ‘better value’, saving him a total of £15. Below you’ll see we’ve put that ‘value’ to the test by comparing his current Driver’s performance with that of a custom fitted alternative.
The results speak for themselves but the benefits of being fitted by your PGA Professional don’t end when you walk off the range. Now I have a record of all of the golfer's vital dimensions, statistics and trends we can monitor his progress and, should his performance take a dip, it’s a (relatively!) simple task for me to make adjustments to both his setup and swing to get his game back to its best.
Many of my club members have taken advantage of visiting the performance centres of Callaway in Leatherhead to get the best out of their investment.
Golfers of all abilities can benefit from a custom club fitting with Callaway Golf. With a variety of fitting options, a team of trained club specialists, and a full line up of innovative golf equipment, Callaway Golf offers a custom fitting experience unsurpassed by anyone in the industry. Whether you are a low handicap looking to be a scratch player or new to the game and unsure of which clubs to purchase, you’ll learn about the best Callaway Golf equipment options for your game, and leave with the confidence that the clubs you are purchasing will match your swing profile.

Daryl Kelley - Head Teaching PGA Professional
Daryl has been appointed at Filton for four years now as head teaching professional, and has had huge success in coaching youngsters through the original YMG scheme, and seeing them through to the early stages of becoming part of the Filton Juniors.
Daryl currently competes on the Gloucester & Somerset PGA, and the Jamega Tour as well as running his successful professional shop at Filton Golf Club.
Brent Ellis - Head Teaching PGA Professional
Brent came to Filton late in 2008 after running his own professional shop at Shirehampton Golf Club. Brent wanted to further his playing career on the Senior Tour along with teaching here at Filton.
Brent has been a massive success with coaching members at the club by reducing their handicaps with his simple teaching methods. Daryl & His Filton Team Win The Cornish Festival 2010

An awesome week ending in an awesome result. Stableford rounds of 85, 82 and 82 gave them a three shot cushion of 249 beating last years team by one point. Filton GC congratulates the team for winning such a prestigious event, and they must feel very proud indeed tonight. Daryl ended up tied 15th which in his own mind could have been so much better with a great first day 63 followed by a get out of jail card 73, but the final day 78 was not going to give him the possible win he so deserved. The boys said they have never seen Daryl strike the ball so well, but luck was not on his side at Trevose, and the putts didnt fall for him. Full press release to follow. Scores
